In 1902, a work of horticultural art was unveiled in the West Princess Street Garden that was commissioned to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII. The following year, the park superintendent and the Edinburgh clockmakers James Ritchie and Son created the clock by installing a clock mechanism thus creating the first "floral clock" in the world.
Every year, the design of the floral clock changes. The annual planting starts in May and takes 2 people five weeks to put in the 35,000 plus plants.
A cuckoo clock, that "cuckoos" every 15 minutes was added in 1952.
The street corner right above the clock is a popular place to catch a variety of Scottish musicians.
