We're headed to Scotland!

About a year ago, we decided we wanted to go to Scotland. On our past hiking trips, we had heard a lot about another popular thru hike, The West Highland Way. We were also intrigued to try a trip through Road Scholar which specializes in active learning trip experiences. So gradually, we moved towards creating a trip where we could try "active learning" with Road Scholar followed by an "active hiking" experience on the West Highland Way.

We are heading to Edinburgh with our good friends, Tim and Lynn,  for Road Scholar's In the Heart of the Scottish Highlands trip which focuses on Highland Scotland's ancient history, the downfall of the Gaelic clans, the Highland Clearances, and the New World Emigration. I (Betsy) am excited because I have a wee bit of Scottish blood. In fact, I'm hoping to learn a little more about my Kerr Clan heritage.

Following our Road Scholar's trip, we are meeting our hiking friends, Kevin, Kris, Tom and Chanda in Tyndrum, Scotland to hike part of the West Highland Way. The West Highland Way winds from Milngavie, just north of Glasgow, all the way to Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. The route covers 94 miles and passes countless green pastures, serene lochs, and dramatic Highland scenery and is typically completed in 8 stages - we are hiking the northern half.

We are excited about this trip as it combines lots of new learning plus a chance to hike part of a famous thru hike - learning and hiking, two of our favorite things!
